Our First Ever Microsoft Store Application!

Meet DaData: a faster, calmer way to understand your data

Deta the Degu is here to help you get a clearer view of your data.

Opening a data file should not feel like starting a software project. Sometimes you only need to answer a simple question: What is in this file? Which rows match? Is there a pattern? Can I compare these values without building a spreadsheet first?

That is the idea behind DaData, a fast, accessible desktop data viewer for Windows. It brings tables, search, filtering, statistics and quick charts into one focused application, while keeping the everyday workflow pleasantly direct.

Info: DaData is currently being prepared for the Microsoft Store. A development MSIX package has been built for testing; the public Store release will follow after final identity setup and certification.

Your data, without the obstacle course

Data tools often live at one of two extremes. They are either too limited to answer the next question, or powerful enough to require a notebook, a collection of packages and half an hour of setup. DaData is designed for the useful space in between.

Open a file and the data appears in a clean, paged table. Search for a value, apply a compound filter, sort a column or inspect a long cell without losing your place. When a table starts telling a story, turn it into a quick graph or export exactly the rows you need.

DaData is for the moment between “I have a file” and “now I understand it.”

What can DaData do?

// DADATA AT A GLANCE
ToolWhat it helps you do
ViewBrowse large tables in responsive 500-row pages instead of loading an overwhelming wall of data.
Find & filterSearch quickly or combine text, number and date conditions to isolate the records that matter.
SortOrder results while keeping filters stable and predictable.
ComparePin cells side by side and compare values without copying them into another application.
SummariseSee useful numeric statistics without writing formulas or code.
GraphCreate histograms, category counts, line charts and scatter plots, then export them as PNG or CSV.
Edit & exportMake focused changes and safely export the complete table or only the filtered result.

One viewer for the formats you actually meet

DaData understands a wide range of structured-data formats: CSV, JSON, YAML, XML, Excel, Parquet, ORC, Avro, Feather, SQLite databases and SQL dumps. That means fewer one-off utilities and fewer detours through conversion websites just to see what a file contains.

Note: Format support can depend on the libraries included with a particular build. DaData reports a clear message when an optional reader is unavailable instead of silently misreading the file.

Accessibility is the starting point

Accessibility is not a finishing touch in DaData. The interface includes adjustable type, high-contrast options, larger interaction targets, visible keyboard focus and keyboard-first navigation. A full-value inspector makes long or clipped cells easier to read, and the colour system offers fourteen templates with configurable accents and light or dark backgrounds.

The goal is not to force every person into one “accessible” appearance. It is to make the interface adaptable, legible and comfortable for different eyes, different input methods and different working environments.

Success: Your visual preferences are remembered, so DaData can reopen looking and behaving the way you chose.

Meet Deta the Degu

The little face peeking through the letter D is Deta, DaData’s degu mascot. Degus are curious, alert and remarkably good at investigating their surroundings, which felt right for a tool built to explore unfamiliar datasets. Deta also gives the application a warmer identity than the usual grid-and-chart software.

Quick actions when you already know the question

DaData can open into focused workflows instead of making you repeat the same setup every time. Its command-line quick actions cover viewing, finding, graphing, statistics and comparisons, and the packaged Windows version is designed to expose matching actions from File Explorer.

dadata.exe --quick view "C:\data\sales.csv"
dadata.exe --quick find "C:\data\sales.csv"
dadata.exe --quick graph "C:\data\sales.csv"
dadata.exe --quick stats "C:\data\sales.csv"
dadata.exe --quick compare "C:\data\sales.csv"
Tip: Use the normal Open action when you want the full workspace, or choose a quick action when you want to jump straight to a specific task.

A native desktop workflow

DaData is a Windows desktop application, not a website wearing a desktop frame. File operations run in the background to keep the interface responsive, exports are staged safely before replacing a destination, and single-instance forwarding sends newly opened files to the running app instead of scattering extra windows across the desktop.

The MSIX package adds the pieces expected of a modern Windows installation: a clean install and uninstall path, application identity, Start menu integration and registered file actions. It also creates a practical route to Microsoft Store distribution.

Warning: The current MSIX is a development package for local testing. A Store-download link will be added only after the final Partner Center identity is applied and Microsoft certification is complete.

Technical details

DaData is written in Python and uses a native desktop interface. It reads tabular formats through specialised format libraries, keeps long-running work away from the main interface thread, displays records in 500-row pages and stores user preferences under the Windows application-data folder. The packaged build bundles its runtime so end users do not need to install Python separately.

Built for real moments, not perfect datasets

Real data arrives with odd column names, missing values, mixed types, long text, unexpected encodings and files much larger than anyone mentioned. DaData is being built for those ordinary, imperfect moments: the attachment you need to check before a meeting, the export you want to verify, the database you need to inspect or the column you suspect contains the answer.

There is more to refine before the public release, but the direction is clear: keep exploration fast, make the interface adaptable and help people move from file to understanding with less friction.

What would you like DaData to do next?

If you regularly work with structured-data files, I would love to know which formats, accessibility options and quick actions matter most to you. Feedback from real workflows will shape what gets polished and what gets built next.

Tip: Watch this space for the first public build, installation instructions and the official Microsoft Store link.
